LOVER UNBOUND by J.R. Ward Published by Signet Eclipse September 2007 Book Five: Vishous' Story
In the shadows of the night in Caldwell, New York, there’s a deadly war raging between vampires and their slayers. And there exists a secret band of brothers like no other—six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. Now, the cold heart of a cunning predator will be warmed against its will…
Ruthless and brilliant, Vishous son of the Bloodletter possesses a destructive curse and a frightening ability to see the future. As a pretrans growing up in his father's war camp, he was tormented and abused. As a member of the Brotherhood, he has no interest in love or emotion, only the battle with the Lessening Society. But when a mortal injury puts him in the care of a human surgeon, Dr. Jane Whitcomb compels him to reveal his inner pain and taste true pleasure for the first time- until a destiny he didn't choose takes him into a future that cannot include her.
After listening to Lover Unleashed and enjoying so much I decided to go back and listen to Lover Unbound,(book 5 and Vishous’s book) I have originally read it a few years back, these titles have just recently been published on audio, or at least in a downloadable format, and of course my suspicions have been confirmed, this is a much better book on audio, don’t get me wrong this still a great read, especially if you have enjoyed the previous books from The Black Dagger Brotherhood, I can’t say enough of how much I enjoy J.R. Ward’s writing, she has created a fantastic world, full romance, sensuality, passion, suspense, loyalty and enough sexiness to make this one of my favorite series ever and to keep me on the alert for new releases, but when it comes to a narrator taking a book to different level there’s no better example than Jim Frangione and the narration and I have to add interpretation of this book, again he brings this book to life, giving every character all the dimensions that makes it a great listen, I’m not going to go into the plot I have posted a link to the best review I’ve found on the web, but again I have to highly recommend this audio book, especially if you are planning a re-read, why not enjoy it in a different way?, you won’t be disappointed. I f you are new to this series, do yourself a favor and start with Dark Lover, also available on audio and a great introduction to this ride. Be aware of the strong sexual content; this is raw, gritty and in your face kind of book, but what a great ride it is.
Other listeners's opinions:
By M, Nov 3, 2010 I almost didn't buy this because of the book reviews from other places. All kinds of criticism about lack of romance, weird ending and too much violience. Honestly I think it was one of the best ones she's written. I really thought the story between Vishous and Jane was quite unique and compelling. People complained about the BDSM like it was 90% of the book. It was barely noticable. Yes, the ending was not traditional but these are fantasy books. Laughable to say that the HEA doesn't work because of Jane's condition. What drew me in was the relationship between Vischous and all the other characters. All the sub plots really enhanced this story too. The SV and the choice of Phury as the Primale set up the next book perfectly. I've already read Rhevenge and JMs stories and this feeds into it perfectly. Love Ward's gritty writing. She's really ruined me fo the fluff kind of vampire books. These characters come to life with complex personalities and stories catch and hold my interest so completely. Can't wait to move onto Phury's story.
By Crystal, Jun 3, 2009 If you are a J R Ward fan this is another excellent installment in the Brotherhood Series (Book 5). Ward's storyline is unique and fresh as always. Interesting plot developments that leave you wanting more, more, more!!! If you have not experienced J R Ward's vampire world I highly recommend each and every installment of this series. I really like the narrator even though there is not much difference between female and male voices...I hope he continues with the series...have purchased each and every title in series, all are amazing, well worth the credit.
